(Two works new works, finished constructing 21/12/14)

(All current pieces working on)

Yesterday I finished constructing two new ceramic artworks to add to the others that are also in the making.

The plan now is to get everything fired and apply the color and glaze.

Ideas transforming into reality

Today I have been continuing to construct my two latest artworks. I thought I would include an image of my drawings next to one of the pieces I am working on to show part of the idea process.

The drawings are slightly different from the piece being created, I like to use them more as a reference rather than a set idea I must follow. Drawing helps me to think about ways of constructing the forms and colour application.

I also find throughout the making process I will be constantly drawing different stages of the outcome. This helps me to analyse the situation as the overall form will be constantly changing.

New artworks in progress

Today I have been busy throwing cone shapes on the wheel. I thought I would try a different shape as previously I had been focused on throwing cylinders.

The plan next will be to wait until they are firm so I can cut out the bases, from there I can start deconstructing and reconstructing them all to form sculptural artworks.

Edwardian Cloakroom, Bristol

(The 100 year old toilet roll? Like some kind of ancient scroll)

Last Sunday I had the opportunity to visit the Edwardian Cloakroom, a disused toilet space in Clifton, Bristol. Bristol council now uses this space to host a variety of art exhibitions. See their website for more information at... https://bristolcitycouncilcreativespace.wordpress.com/the-edwardian-cloakroom-2/

As unattractive as it may sound it turns out this building is really oozing with personality and character. The building is made up of two sections, a men's and ladies room. From the outside the building looks quite big but its only till you step inside each room you realise how small it is. The building retains a lot of its original qualities from when it was fully functional but what really caught my eye was the buildings interior space and way the light and ambience of these two rooms interacted with its architectural features. Features include the black and white checkered floor, windows and the wall tiles.

Pictures taken from Birmingham China Town

I was in Birmingham a wile back, whilst I was there I had a little bit of time to take some photographs from the China Town area.

The ones I have selected have been cropped to focus on certain forms, colour and space, I have been doing this on and off for a wile now and I think it helps me really focus more specifically on interesting parts within a picture. Perhaps in a way it helps highlight the atmosphere of the space and place. As these pictures are taken from China Town red seems to stand out quite a bit in some of them and this seems to influence the way this built environment is seen. It helps add more meaning, creates character and associations to identity.

Developing a functional range to respond to my ceramic Sculptural Artworks

(Vegetable Dish)

(Vegetable Dish)

(Noodle Bowls)

(Noodle Bowls)

Today I have been working on developing ideas to do with my functional ceramics. The idea is to create something that can have a direct relationship to my sculptural ceramic artworks through aspects such as simplicity of form and colour.

Previously I had tried cups and this is something I would still like to develop but for today I thought I would try making noodle bowls and vegetable dishes. When considering what new forms to try out I thought about the types of food I really enjoy eating and as I do not eat meat I thought about making items that responds to these two types of food for now.

They are still in the developing stages and need to be completed. Hopefully I will post the results when they are finished.

Ceramic artworks in progress

Thought I would share some images of two artworks I am currently working on. I have been making them on and off now for the past couple of weeks. So far they are a little bit more complex from the last ones I made as I would like to keep developing the forms further.

The shapes may still change as I might add more pieces so I guess I will see how it goes.

Clay paintings

These images were unexpected. At the time I was spraying ceramic slips onto my recent artworks, then when I took the forms off the wooden boards I discovered these.

There almost like prints developed from the forms of the artworks. They look as though they have some kind of presence or lost meaning, they look detached or like a residue or imprint. Mysterious and serial.

Contemporary Art & Design Fair at the Candid Arts Trust

The Fair is now finished and and all the artworks have been put back in their boxes ready to be collected tomorrow and taken back to Bristol.

Sadly I did not sell anything but on the other hand a lot of people really appreciated the work but perhaps not the price. This weekend defiantly got me thinking about aspects to do with value, all I can do is learn from experiences.

Thank you everyone for coming and my wife for helping me.

Setting up for Islington Contemporary Art & Design Fair at the Candid Arts Trust, London

Today I started setting up my stand at the Contemporary Art & Design Fair at the Candid Arts Trust which is behind Angel Tube Station so its basically a minute walk.

I took an early bus from Bristol and had my work delivered by a carrier. Most of the boxes arrived safely although I am still waiting for one more box to arrive, it should arrive tomorrow which is lucky as I still have another day to finish setting up.

Apart from that the space is ready the table is their. I had some time to test out the space with the work to get an idea of what kind of presentation I would like to go for.

From this experience I think I now realize how important it is to drive so I hope one day I could have my own van to transport my work.

Everyone is welcome to come and see my work at this event.

Dates are: main event 25-26 Oct 2014, 11:00am - 6:00pm. Please see the link (www.icadf.com) for more information. Looking forward to see you there.
