Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center Denmark 2015, Discovering new ideas

Today I have spent my day sketching out some new ideas, I have been trying to think about the integration of new forms. I would still like the artworks to communicate ideas linked to architectural elements but just like Stonehenge I would like to evoke questioning and new ways to see and experience an object.

Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center Denmark 2015, A day to reflect and to think about the future

Today in all honesty has not been a good day, after firing my work I discovered that all of the color that was applied to the surface had chipped of the clay body. I do not know why exactly this happened as I had never had this problem before. It was heart braking to see as I really enjoyed making the work.

Also myself and my wife have also been finding it difficult adapting to this residency. It has made us realize who our true friends are. I have realized that you can be friendly and kind to other people but in return some people don't appreciate that kindness. This then makes me question if I have done something wrong.

On a positive note this residency has given me the opportunity to learn something about myself, I work better alone and with my wife as I can concentrate. Additionally it has given me the opportunity to develop my ideas and making techniques which I am looking forward to put into practice when I get home.

For the rest of this residency I am just going to focus on planing a structure to create new work for when I get back hame as I will need to prepare for Ceramic Art York.

Recent pictures taken from the local Beach

(Interesting form, not sure why it is there or what it is used for)

Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center Denmark 2015, Introducing the Triangle and Circle

(using drawing to help the development of the form)

(Experimenting with a hole cutter)

(I have seen a lot of triangles lately in architecture and paintings around Europe and in Denmark so I decided to ingrate one into this new artwork)

Currently I have been constructing a new artwork whilst I have been in the process of trying to finish off the previous work. The making for this one is now complete. It is an unexpected piece that took me on an experimental journey. I feel this one has opened even more possibilities for potential new works.

Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center Denmark 2015, Ceramic Festival, Skælskør, Denmark

Yesterday myself and my wife had some of our work on display for the local ceramic festival, I made some cups for the event. It was nice to meet some of the local people, an interesting experience. It was also great to have sold some cups to the locals, I am glad they have found a home. Some of them will also be going to Taiwan for another buyer which is interesting.

Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center Denmark 2015, Evolving Constructions

Today I have been continuing to construct my 4 new artworks, I was hopping to get them finished today but it seems I still got some more work to do. The forms are continuing to change and evolve and it seems to be taking me on a journey full of new surprises. Whilst making these pieces I have been trying to think about how I can evoke questions through the way the forms are contracted. I am trying to think about the arrangement of parts and if they can be suggestive in any way.

Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center Denmark 2015, Continuing to construct artworks

(Cutting)

(Trying out something different, introducing closed spaces)

(Assembling)

Today has been a busy day of contracting, I have been using all the shapes thrown previously to create new forms. I have been trying to free up my mind and see what new things I can discover, for example by investigating spherical forms and closed spaces. Hopefully tomorrow I will continue building, I have 4 artworks currently in the making, I will have to see how these pieces develop.

Within the artworks I want to continue to express movement and a sense of wonder and curiosity perhaps hinting at a sense of function. Its interesting as I am currently staying in a B&B and in our room their is a book called the 100 wonders of the world which has an image of Stonehenge inside as well as other very old buildings. This book reminded me of how built structures are essentially idea based and that meanings and beliefs are in a sense imbued or attached to the built structure that has been created.

Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center Denmark 2015, Beginning to construct first new sculptural piece

(Cones near enough to the same size and ready to assemble)

(Making sure each cut is as precise as I can achieve)

(Main part of contracting is complete, just need to think about the base)

Today I have had the opportunity to start making a new sculpture, its smaller compared to other ones I have made to date although this might add a nice contract compared to previous ones.

The plan is with this sculpture is to have another attempt at making a wall piece, so I have purposely kept the hight quite low as I don't want it to stick out too much from the wall. I just need to figure out how to create the base. The form might continue to change if I decide to add new pieces on so it really just depends.

(Finished making new cups, now ready to fire)

I managed to take some photos from around the local town, I am wondering if any of these images could inform some of the new works in the making.

Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center Denmark 2015, First day on the job, space is almost ready to go

(Studio space I will be working from)

(Kiln area)

(Spray Booth)

(Glazing area + materials)

Today is the first official day to start making, myself and my wife have got less than a month to try and do as much as we can. No doubt the time will go really quickly but I am looking forward to see how this space plays out.

So fay the working space looks good, all the equipment and materials are there, I think everything is almost ready. Today the plan is to start making some new sculptural works and functional items.
